In 30 seconds
- Barcelona are 1st on 30 points, Atlético 2nd on 28, so a home win puts Atlético top after matchday 12.
- Rodri is out, the club confirmed; Dani Olmo, Xavi Espart and Roony Bardghji are reported out and Jules Koundé is doubtful. Atlético are reported to be without Cuti Romero.
- Atlético's defence will not stop Barcelona scoring, so this ends level.
The story
Two points separate the top two, and the gap could flip on Sun 8 Nov. Diego Simeone's Atlético have won every one of their seven La Liga games since Sun 13 Sep, beating Real Madrid 2–1 at the Metropolitano along the way. Win, and they are top of the table after matchday 12.
They come into it off a bad night, though. Bayern won 2–0 in Madrid on Tue 3 Nov, Atlético's only defeat in their last ten games, and the first time in that run they failed to score. Cuti Romero misses out with an adductor strain, Marca reported, and Koke, back in the squad, played only about half an hour against Bayern.
Hans-Dieter Flick's Barcelona have scored freely and conceded plenty. They lost the Clásico 2–1 at home on Sun 25 Oct, then put six past Alavés and three past Aston Villa. But the injury list is long: Rodri has a hamstring injury, the club confirmed, Dani Olmo, Xavi Espart and Roony Bardghji are reported out too, and Jules Koundé, Eric García and Andreas Christensen are all racing to be fit.
This decides it: Lamine Yamal against Dávid Hancko. Barcelona scored at least twice in all five of their away games in that run, and Yamal, with Raphinha beside him, is how they will try to do it again. If Hancko wins that duel, Atlético can edge it and go top; if Yamal wins it, Barcelona get their goals, and with Rodri out of their midfield they are unlikely to stop Atlético getting theirs.

Checked Fri 6 Nov 07:40 UTC: fcbarcelona.com (Rodri's tests, 4 Nov; the Villa squad, 3 Nov), El Desmarque (4 Nov, citing Sport), Jornada Perfecta (5 Nov, citing Marca) and Sport Aragón (5 Nov). We don't publish guessed XIs.
Jonathan David has 2 goals in Atlético's last ten but started on the bench against Bayern and came on for Julián Álvarez, with no injury reported, so Simeone has three strikers for two places. Gabriel Jesus, with 3 for Barcelona in that window, was in the Villa squad without starting.

Who to watch
The duel to watch: Lamine Yamal against Dávid Hancko. Both started their side's last game on Tue 3 Nov, and by our reading of the line-ups Hancko is the Atlético defender on Yamal's side of the pitch. Yamal has 8 goals in Barcelona's last ten; if Hancko keeps him in front of him, Barcelona have to find another way through.

All 5 meetings
Result for Atlético Madrid. The newest five of ten meetings held since 2024. OddsIntel match database, read 6 Nov 2026.
Barcelona won both spring visits to the Metropolitano by a goal, 2–1 in La Liga on Sat 4 Apr 2026 and 2–1 in the Champions League ten days later. Atlético's two wins in the five were both by two goals or more.
Numbers that matter
Goals scored, last ten: Atlético Madrid 18, Barcelona 38 (higher is better)
Barcelona score more than twice as many, and they scored in every one of their ten.
Goals conceded, last ten · fewer is better: Atlético Madrid 5, Barcelona 15 (lower is better)
Atlético's real strength: two of their five came against Bayern.
Clean sheets, last ten: Atlético Madrid 6, Barcelona 2 (higher is better)
The surprise is how rarely Barcelona keep one: both came at home.

Our call, explained
Our call: a draw, 2–2. Atlético kept 6 clean sheets in their last ten, and Simeone's side will make Barcelona work for every chance. But Barcelona's away games in that run went the same way every time: at least two goals scored, five at Real Betis and two even in defeat at Paris Saint-Germain, and Yamal and Raphinha give them more than one way to hurt a defence. At the other end, Barcelona play without Rodri, reportedly without Olmo and possibly without Koundé, and they conceded in every one of those five away games. So we expect goals at both ends: Barcelona get their two, and Atlético, at home against a midfield without Rodri, get two back.
Where this could go wrong. If Hancko and Grimaldo keep Yamal quiet, Atlético have the defence to win a tight game 2–1 and go top. The other way, Barcelona have put five or more past three sides in their last ten, and an Atlético team without Romero could be opened up if Barcelona score first and Simeone's side have to come out.
Updates
Nothing has changed since we published. Next: Simeone's and Flick's press conferences, news on Koundé, Eric García, Christensen and Johnny Cardoso, LaLiga's choice of referee, and both confirmed team sheets about an hour before kick-off.
Data note: results, scorers, the table and line-ups from our database, read 6 Nov 00:40 UTC, so the counts include both sides' Champions League games on 3 Nov. Over Atlético's last ten games 3 goals have no named Atlético scorer in our lists, and over Barcelona's 1, so each player's tally is a minimum.
