In 30 seconds
- Everton knocked Newcastle out of the League Cup 3–1 on Thu 29 Oct; the league rematch comes four days later.
- Newcastle are eighth on 11 points, Everton 11th on 10, both after eight games.
- Burn against Barry decides whether Newcastle's leaky defence survives a second look in four days.
The story
Matthias Jaissle's Newcastle get four days to answer the League Cup defeat at Everton on Thu 29 Oct. At Everton, James Garner and Hayden Hackney put Everton two up by half-time, Thierno Barry added a third on 69 minutes, and Dan Burn's header a minute from time changed nothing. Afterwards Jaissle said his young side had not been clinical enough, calling the defeat part of the story of their season so far.
David Moyes won that tie without Jack Grealish, whom Everton left out for a breach of club discipline; Sky Sports reported he failed to turn up for a training session. Everton are one win from their first League Cup semi-final since 2016.
The history runs Everton's way: they won on their last two visits to Tyneside, 1–0 in May 2025 and 3–2 in February 2026.
This decides it: whether Newcastle's back line, with Burn in it, can cope with Barry a second time in four days.
Form
Three defeats in five; the win at Palace is the one clean sheet.
Two league defeats without scoring before the cup win.

Team news
Checked Fri 30 Oct 21:50 UK time: newcastleunited.com and evertonfc.com (team news, team sheets and match reports), Sky Sports and the Shields Gazette; Osula's injury from Jaissle after the cup tie (Hayters TV). Reported = not yet confirmed by the club for this game. Line-ups: confirmed about an hour before kick-off; they go under Updates. We don't publish guessed XIs.
Bazoumana Touré, with 2 goals in Newcastle's last ten, did not start at Everton but came off the bench for Jacob Murphy after 67 minutes, the club's match report says. Charly Alcaraz, whose goal in Everton's run was the late winner against Wolves on 16 Sep, three minutes after coming on, was a substitute again on 29 Oct and came on late. Neither is reported injured. With Osula doubtful, Newcastle's eleven below may well change up front.

Who to watch
The duel to watch: Thierno Barry against Dan Burn. Barry led Everton's line in the cup tie and scored; Burn started in Newcastle's defence and headed their only goal. If Burn wins the balls played up to Barry, Everton have to find goals from elsewhere; if Barry gets free, Newcastle are in trouble again.

Our call, explained
Our call: a draw, 1–1. Newcastle should score at home, even if Osula misses out: Barnes and Willock carry goals from wide and from midfield, and only Aston Villa kept them out in the run. Everton should score too, because Barry against a defence that leaks goals is where their goal comes from. What stops us calling an away win is that Everton won none of their four away league games in that run, drawing three and losing at Arsenal.
Where this could go wrong. Newcastle were beaten by this same side on 29 Oct and may be again if Grealish returns. The other way, they won 2–0 at Crystal Palace on 25 Oct, and if they finish their chances at home, they can win it.
Updates
Nothing has changed since we published. Next: Jaissle's and Moyes's pre-match news, the referee when it is announced, then confirmed line-ups, about an hour before kick-off.
Data note: results, scorers, the table and line-ups from our database, read 29 Oct 22:40 UTC, so the counts run to both sides' League Cup tie on 29 Oct. A player goal count leaves out any goal whose scorer we do not hold (3 of Everton's 14 and at least 1 of Newcastle's 15 in their last ten), so read each one as a floor.
