Our call: AC Milan win 2–1

Ferencváros will score, but Milan have more ways to score, and Strahinja Pavlović keeping Bamidele Yusuf to one goal is the job.

We'll mark this call after full time.

In 30 seconds

  • Ferencváros are 4th with nine points from three games; AC Milan are 24th with three.
  • Milan play Ferencváros without Mike Maignan, who is suspended.
  • We expect Milan to score twice at San Siro, and that ends Ferencváros's run.

The story

Ruben Amorim's AC Milan go into Thu 5 Nov on the back of a 3–1 derby win over Inter on Sat 31 Oct. Christian Pulisic and Adrien Rabiot scored inside the first ten minutes, both set up by Diego Moreira, and Moreira added the third before half-time. Three days earlier Milan had lost 4–2 at home to Bologna, and the squad is still thin: Fikayo Tomori, Matteo Gabbia, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Samuel Chukwueze and Alexis Saelemaekers all missed the derby.

Europe has gone less well. Milan lost 2–0 at home to Benfica on 16 Sep, won 4–0 in Salzburg on 15 Oct and lost 3–0 at Bournemouth on 22 Oct, where Mike Maignan was sent off for a shove on Tyler Adams. UEFA banned him for one game, and this is it. After three games Milan are 24th of 36, level on three points with the four sides directly below them.

Balázs Borbély's Ferencváros come on a very different run. They beat Paks 2–0 at home on Sun 1 Nov, with goals from Bamidele Yusuf and Kristoffer Zachariassen, for a fourth win in a row, and they have nine points from their three Europa League games: 3–1 at Celtic, 2–1 against Viktoria Plzeň and 4–1 against Torreense. Borbély said after the Paks game that preparation for Milan began on Mon 2 Nov. Nemzeti Sport notes that this is the club's first competitive game against Milan, and that no Hungarian side has won at San Siro since Honvéd beat Inter on 15 Sep 1976.

The duel is Bamidele Yusuf against Strahinja Pavlović. Yusuf led the line alone against Paks and scored; Pavlović started in the middle of Milan's back four against Inter. Milan's job is to hold Yusuf to one and trust their own forwards for two.

We don't publish guessed XIs.

Milan's leading scorer in this run did not start the derby. Alphadjo Cissè, with 5 goals in Milan's last ten, was on the bench against Inter and came on in the 82nd minute; nobody has reported him injured. For Ferencváros, Bero is fit again after injury and played the last part of the Paks game. Maignan's ban means Milan's eleven below changes in goal at least.

Who to watch

The duel to watch: Bamidele Yusuf against Strahinja Pavlović. Yusuf played as Ferencváros's only striker against Paks, with Zachariassen, Márius Corbu and Veljko Birmančević behind him; Pavlović started at centre-back for Milan against Inter. If Pavlović wins the balls played up to Yusuf, Ferencváros's runners from midfield have little to feed on; if Yusuf holds it up, Zachariassen arrives in the box.

Our call, explained

Our call: AC Milan win 2–1. We expect Ferencváros to score, because they have scored in every game of this run and Zachariassen keeps arriving from midfield behind Yusuf. We expect Milan to score twice: they scored three against Inter, Atalanta and Lecce at San Siro, and Rabiot, Moreira and Pulisic all scored in the derby. Ferencváros's three Europa League wins came against Celtic, Plzeň and Torreense, all of them below Milan in the table, so this is the hardest test of their run, and Milan play it with a back line missing Tomori and a goalkeeper missing Maignan.

Where this could go wrong. Milan lost at San Siro to Benfica and to Bologna in this run, and let in four against Bologna; if Yusuf gets the better of Pavlović early and we're wrong, a draw is likelier than a Ferencváros win. The other way, Milan won 4–0 in Salzburg in this competition, and if they score first the margin could be bigger than one.

Updates

Nothing has changed since we published. Next: Amorim's and Borbély's press conferences on Wed 4 Nov, UEFA's choice of referee, and both confirmed team sheets about an hour before kick-off.

Data note: results, scorers, the table and line-ups from our database, read 2 Nov 17:40 UTC, so the counts include Milan's game on Sat 31 Oct and Ferencváros's on Sun 1 Nov. Over those ten games 5 Ferencváros goals have no named scorer in our lists, so each Ferencváros player's tally is a minimum.
