How the Europa League league phase works
Thirty-six clubs share one table. Each plays eight matches against eight different opponents, four at home and four away. Thirteen clubs qualified directly, twelve won the play-off round, four came across from Champions League qualifying and seven lost in the Champions League play-offs.
- 1st to 8th: a direct place in the round of 16.
- 9th to 24th: a two-legged knockout play-off in February for the other eight places.
- 25th to 36th: eliminated, with no route into the Conference League.

Who qualifies for the round of 16?
When the league phase ends on 28 January 2027, the top eight are through to the round of 16. Clubs from 9th to 24th meet over two legs on 18 and 25 February, and the eight winners join them. From there it is straight knockout: the round of 16 in March, the quarter-finals and the first semi-final legs in April, the second legs on 6 May and the final in Frankfurt on 26 May.
