In 30 seconds
- Lyon are 12th in the Europa League with six points; Real Sociedad are 14th with four. The top eight go straight to the last 16.
- Real Sociedad have conceded in nine of their last ten games.
- Lyon's manager is reported to be leaving, and our call leans on that.
The story
RMC Sport and L'Equipe reported on Mon 2 Nov that Paulo Fonseca has told his Lyon players he is leaving for Sporting, a day after a 2–0 home win over Angers. His assistant Jorge Maciel is expected to take charge in San Sebastián; neither club had confirmed anything when we checked.
Lyon won all five home games in their last ten, Angers included, but lost their last three away from home, at Lens, Hoffenheim and Paris Saint-Germain, scoring one goal across the three. After three Europa League games they are 12th with six points; the top eight go straight to the last 16, ninth to 24th play off.
Pellegrino Matarazzo's Real Sociedad are 14th with four points. They lost the Basque derby 2–1 at Athletic Club on Sun 1 Nov to an Álex Berenguer penalty early in the second half, which the club called a penalty that never was; Matarazzo said he could not understand why VAR did not step in. The defeat ended a run of four straight league wins.
This decides it: Luka Sučić against Tanner Tessmann. Sučić has four goals in Real Sociedad's last ten, the equaliser at San Mamés among them; Tessmann started in Lyon's midfield three against Angers. If Tessmann keeps Sučić quiet, Lyon can take a point back to France; if not, Real Sociedad's goals keep coming.

Team news
Checked Mon 2 Nov 18:00 UTC: Noticias de Gipuzkoa (31 Oct) and El Gol Digital (16 Oct) for Real Sociedad; Lyon's statement on Šulc (25 Oct), Maxifoot (1 Nov) and Lyon Foot for Lyon. Reported = not yet confirmed by the club for this match. Line-ups: confirmed about an hour before kick-off; they go under Updates. We don't publish guessed XIs.
One of Real Sociedad's leading scorers did not start on 1 Nov. Orri Óskarsson, with three goals in their last ten, began the derby on the bench: El Gol Digital reported on 30 Oct that Matarazzo would add a midfielder at San Mamés, and Óskarsson came on after 62 minutes. Nobody has reported him injured. For Lyon, Šulc's two goals in their last ten are lost for months.

Who to watch
The duel to watch: Luka Sučić against Tanner Tessmann. Sučić started in Real Sociedad's midfield at San Mamés and scored their goal; Tessmann started in Lyon's midfield against Angers. If Tessmann wins it, Lyon can find Ernest Nuamah; if Sučić gets free, Mikel Oyarzabal will see plenty of the ball.

Our call, explained
Our call: Real Sociedad win 2–1. We expect Real Sociedad to score twice: they have scored in nine of their last ten and put 15 past opponents in their last five games. We expect Lyon to score once, because Real Sociedad have conceded in nine of their last ten and Nuamah has four goals in Lyon's last ten. What settles it is the visitors' week: a manager reported to be on his way out, Šulc and Openda injured, and an away run that has gone wrong.
Where this could go wrong. Real Sociedad won two of their four home games in this run and lost the other two, 0–3 to Atletico Madrid and 1–2 to Bournemouth in this competition; Lyon have already won once away in it. The other way, Real Sociedad scored six at Lillestrøm and five at Málaga in October, and if they score first the margin could be bigger than one.
Updates
Nothing has changed since we published. Next: Lyon's word on who leads the team at Anoeta, both pre-match press conferences on Wed 4 Nov, UEFA's choice of referee, and both confirmed team sheets about an hour before kick-off.
Data note: results, scorers, the table and line-ups from our database, read 1 Nov 23:40 UTC, so the counts include both sides' games on Sun 1 Nov. In those ten games the scorer lists have no name for 1 Real Sociedad goal and 2 Lyon goals, so each player's tally is a minimum. Team news and match details from both clubs, UEFA.com, LaLiga, Noticias de Gipuzkoa, El Gol Digital, Maxifoot and Lyon Foot.
