Arsenal vs Everton: Arsenal may have to stop Thierno Barry without Bukayo Saka or William Saliba
- Kick-off

Arsenal win. Logged 22 Oct, 07:13 UTC, never edited.
What happened
Arsenal 2–0 Everton. We said Arsenal win 2–1: Right result, wrong score, 10 points.
- Ezri Konsa put Arsenal ahead on 7', from Viktor Gyökeres's pass. Gabriel made it 2–0 on 68', set up by Ben White. We said Thierno Barry v Gabriel Magalhães; Barry did not score, and Gabriel scored Arsenal's second. We said keeping Barry out would decide it; Arsenal did, and Everton did not score.
- Arsenal had 58% of the ball, 20 shots to 8 and 4 on target to 3. What we got right: Arsenal won and scored twice. Where we were wrong: we expected Barry to score and Everton to get one; they scored none.
Before the match: our preview
In 30 seconds
- Arsenal are second on 18 points, three behind Manchester City; Everton are eighth on 10.
- Bukayo Saka is a doubt and William Saliba has not played this season, so Arsenal's right flank and back four are both short.
- Barry will score at the Emirates, and Everton will still go home with nothing.
The story
Mikel Arteta's Arsenal come home from Munich with a point and a worry. They drew 2–2 with Bayern on Wed 21 Oct, Eberechi Eze scoring after coming on and Declan Rice equalising late, but Bukayo Saka had already gone off with a non-contact injury after nine minutes. There was no word on him that night. Arsenal are still without William Saliba, who has not played this season because of a back injury, and Piero Hincapie is racing an ankle problem to be fit for this one.
David Moyes's Everton arrive on the back of their first league defeat of the season, 2–0 at home to Chelsea on Sat 17 Oct, when Pedro Neto scored both. It is still the only game Everton have lost in their last ten, and they have drawn four of their seven league games. They are hard to beat: Moyes's side kept five clean sheets in those ten.
The table makes this a game Arsenal need. They are three points behind Manchester City. Everton sit eighth, level on 10 points with Brentford and Leeds and three behind Chelsea in fourth.
This decides it: whether Arsenal can keep Thierno Barry out. Barry has six of Everton's 14 goals in their last ten, and nobody else in the side has more than two. Everton have scored only twice in their last five meetings with Arsenal, and Barry is the man who could change that.
Form
The 3–0 at Brighton is their only defeat in ten.
Two draws away from home, and a home loss to Chelsea.

Who to watch
The duel to watch: Thierno Barry against Gabriel Magalhães. Barry plays alone up front with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish behind him; Gabriel is the left of Arsenal's two centre-backs and, with Saliba out, the leader of the back four. If Gabriel wins the first ball, Everton have little else; if Barry turns him, Arsenal are defending their own box.

Arsenal scored at least twice in six of their last ten.
Goals conceded, last ten · fewer is better: Arsenal 9, Everton 8 (lower is better)
Almost level, and Everton's ten include a friendly and two League Cup ties.
Wins, last ten: Arsenal 8, Everton 4 (higher is better)
Everton lose rarely, but they draw a lot: five of their ten.

Our call, explained
Our call: Arsenal win 2–1. Arsenal played three home games in their last ten, against Chelsea, Leeds and Lille, and won all three while conceding twice. Everton have scored in eight of their last ten, and Barry carries their scoring, so we expect him to get one past a back four that is still missing Saliba. Arsenal have more ways to score than Everton have ways to stop them: Ødegaard, Eze, Noni Madueke and Rice all chip in, and they do not need Saka to be fit to find two.
Where this could go wrong. Arsenal played in Munich on Wed 21 Oct and Everton have had a full week, so a tired home side could be held, and Everton have drawn four of their seven league games. If Saka is out and Arsenal start slowly, a draw is the likelier miss. If Gabriel keeps Barry quiet, Arsenal can win it without conceding and by more than one.
