Bologna vs Inter: Inter have won one of their last five meetings with Bologna
- Kick-off
- Venue
- Stadio Renato Dall'Ara, Bologna
Inter win. Logged 15 Oct, 07:06 UTC, never edited.
What happened
Bologna 1–3 Inter. We said Inter win 2–1: Right result, wrong score, 10 points.
- Tommaso Pobega put Bologna ahead on 10', from Juan Miranda's pass. Marcus Thuram equalised on 44' from Nicolò Barella's pass, Carlos Augusto made it 2–1 on 69' from Piotr Zieliński's pass, and Ange-Yoan Bonny scored the third on 83', set up by Carlos Augusto. We named Lautaro Martínez against Nicolò Casale as the duel to watch; Lautaro did not score, and Thuram, his partner up front, got Inter's first.
- Inter had 17 shots to 11 and 8 on target to 4, with 65% of the ball. What we got right: an Inter win, and a Bologna goal, as in each of the last five meetings. Where we were wrong: we expected Inter to score twice, and they scored three.
Before the match: our preview
In 30 seconds
- Inter lead Serie A on 16 points. Bologna are 14th on 5, after changing manager in September.
- Inter have won one of their last five meetings with Bologna.
- Lautaro Martínez will score at the Dall'Ara, and Bologna will not keep up.
The story
Bologna have already changed manager. Domenico Tedesco was sacked on Wed 16 Sep with one point from four league games, and Raffaele Palladino signed until June 2029. He has not lost yet: 1–1 with Torino on Sat 19 Sep, then a 2–1 win at Lecce on Sun 11 Oct, Bologna's first league win of the season. Riccardo Orsolini opened the scoring there and Jay Enem, on as a substitute, got the winner. Late on Orsolini hurt his thigh, and the club said on Tue 13 Oct he will be out for about three weeks. Bologna are 14th, and six league games have brought them five goals.
Cristian Chivu's Inter are top on 16 points, level with Lazio and ahead on goal difference, after five wins and a draw in six league games. They score: 25 goals in their last ten games, six of them from Lautaro Martínez. They also concede. Club Brugge won 4–3 at San Siro in the Champions League on Tue 13 Oct, and Chivu said afterwards that he took responsibility. Inter have let in nine goals in their last five games, and this is their third match in eight days.
This decides it: Lautaro Martínez against Nicolò Casale. Lautaro scored twice against Brugge; Casale was the middle of Bologna's back three at Lecce, between Matteo Darmian, the former Inter defender who signed on Thu 8 Oct, and Torbjørn Heggem. Bologna have been awkward opponents for Inter lately, so the question is less whether Inter score than whether Bologna can keep pace.
Form
Unbeaten in two under Palladino.
Fifteen scored over these five.

Reported = not yet confirmed by the club. Line-ups: confirmed about an hour before kick-off; they go under Updates. We don't publish guessed XIs.
Three of the names on Bologna's scoring list from their last ten games are missing from the starting team at Lecce for plain reasons. Thijs Dallinga scored twice in pre-season friendlies, then joined 1. FC Köln on loan on Mon 17 Aug. Jay Enem, signed on Tue 1 Sep, began on the bench at Lecce and came on to score the winner. Artem Dovbyk was an unused substitute that day. All three of Inter's leading scorers, Lautaro, Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Marcus Thuram, started against Brugge.

Who to watch
The duel to watch: Lautaro Martínez against Nicolò Casale. Inter play two up front, Lautaro and Thuram, against Bologna's three centre-backs, so Casale is rarely left one against one. The danger is the space either side of him when Lautaro drops off to link with Barella and Çalhanoğlu. If Casale follows him, Thuram runs into the gap; if he holds his line, Lautaro has time to turn and shoot.

Numbers that matter
Goals scored, last ten: Bologna 11, Inter 25 (higher is better)
Inter score more than twice as many.
Goals conceded, last ten · fewer is better: Bologna 13, Inter 14 (lower is better)
Almost level: the leaders let in more than the side in 14th.
Clean sheets, last ten: Bologna 1, Inter 4 (higher is better)
Bologna's one came in a pre-season friendly against Iraklis.

Our call, explained
We have Inter winning 2–1. They are far the stronger attacking side. Bologna failed to score in four of their last ten. But Inter have conceded in six of their last ten, they played Brugge four days earlier, and Bologna have scored in each of the last five meetings, so we expect Bologna to score once and Inter to score more.
What could undo it. If Bologna cannot find a goal, this becomes a 2–0 and Inter win more comfortably. The other way, Bologna drew 3–3 at the Dall'Ara in May; if Inter's back three are as loose as against Brugge, a draw is likelier than a Bologna win.
