What happened

Everton 0–2 Chelsea. We said Everton win 2–1: Wrong result, 0 points.

  • Pedro Neto scored both Chelsea goals, on 46' and on 90'. We named João Pedro against James Tarkowski as the duel to watch, and said Thierno Barry could win it for Everton at home. João Pedro did not score, but Chelsea still scored twice, and Everton did not score at all.
  • Chelsea had 18 shots to 6 and 7 on target to 5, with 53% of the ball. What we got right: Chelsea scored, as we expected. Where we were wrong: the result; we said Everton would keep it tight and score twice at home, and Chelsea kept a clean sheet.
Before the match: our preview

In 30 seconds

  • Everton have not lost in their last ten games and sit fifth, level on 10 points with Chelsea.
  • Chelsea scored 14 goals in their last five games and let in 11.
  • Chelsea will score at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and it still will not be enough.

The story

David Moyes's Everton have not lost a game since the season began. Six league games have brought two wins and four draws, and they are fifth on 10 points. Count every game we hold and the run is ten without defeat, back to a pre-season win at Newcastle on 12 Aug. Moyes was still unhappy after the 2–2 at Hull on Sun 11 Oct, saying his side should have won. It has been a strange week off the pitch: on Fri 9 Oct the Friedkin Group said it was open to selling the club, and Moyes said he "only found out this morning myself along with everybody else." The summer also took Iliman Ndiaye, sold to Manchester City on deadline day, and brought Jack Grealish in on loan from City.

Xabi Alonso, in his first season at Chelsea, has a side that does the opposite. Chelsea scored 29 goals in their last ten games, including 6–3 against Leeds in the League Cup and 4–3 against Brighton, and they conceded in nine of those ten. Before the international break Sky Sports counted 21 Premier League games since their last clean sheet, and Bournemouth still scored at Stamford Bridge in the 5–1 win on Sat 10 Oct. Chelsea are sixth, level on points with Everton and with Brentford in fourth. The winner here moves to 13.

This decides it: João Pedro against James Tarkowski. João Pedro scored twice against Bournemouth and has seven in Chelsea's last ten. Tarkowski and Michael Keane were the centre-backs at Hull, with Jarrad Branthwaite moved to left-back because Vitalii Mykolenko was hurt. Everton have let in four goals in their last five games, and the question is whether that holds against João Pedro, Palmer and Rogers.

Christian Nørgaard · Evertonnamed in the matchday squad at Hull for the first time after injury, though Moyes said on Fri 9 Oct he was not sure Nørgaard was ready to be involved. (reported)Back

Checked Wed 14 Oct 15:15 UTC: evertonfc.com, Sky Sports and BBC Sport (Moyes after Hull) for Everton, with Goodison News; Sky Sports and football.london (Alonso on James) for Chelsea. Reported = not yet confirmed by the club. Line-ups: confirmed about an hour before kick-off; they go under Updates. We don't publish guessed XIs.

Two of Everton's leading scorers did not start at Hull. Tyrique George, who joined permanently from Chelsea in July and so can play against his old club, began on the bench and came on for Brennan Johnson after 66 minutes; no reason was given by Sky Sports or the BBC. Iliman Ndiaye scored twice before he was sold to Manchester City on 1 Sep. Thierno Barry and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who scored Everton's goals at Hull, both started. All of Chelsea's top three, João Pedro, Rogers and Cole Palmer, started against Bournemouth.

Who to watch

The duel to watch: João Pedro against James Tarkowski. João Pedro led Chelsea's line against Bournemouth with Palmer and Rogers just behind him. When he drops deep, Tarkowski has to decide whether to follow him. If he steps out, Palmer and Rogers can run into the gap behind; if he stays, João Pedro gets time to turn. Everton's two holding midfielders, James Garner and Harrison Armstrong at Hull, are there to close that space.

Our call, explained

We have Everton winning 2–1. They keep games tight: half of their last ten ended with a clean sheet, and Barry has 7 of their 17 goals in that run. Chelsea are the better attacking side, and we expect João Pedro or Palmer to score. But Chelsea gave up three at Brentford on 18 Sep and three to Brighton and Leeds at Stamford Bridge, and Everton, at home, have the striker to punish a back line that has gone so long without a Premier League clean sheet.

What could undo it. If Reece James is fit and Palmer finds space between Everton's lines, Chelsea have enough goals to win by two. The other way, Everton have drawn four of their six league games; if they sit deep and Chelsea's forwards are quiet, a 1–1 draw is more likely than a bigger Everton win.
