What happened

PSV Eindhoven 1–1 Feyenoord. We said a draw, 2–2: Right result, wrong score, 10 points.

  • Our full-time feed for this game holds the score only, with no scorers or goal minutes, so we name nobody. That leaves our duel, Anis Hadj Moussa v Filip Kostić, unjudged here. We said both sides would score and the points would be shared; that is how it ended, one goal each.
  • We hold no shot or possession figures for this game either. What we got right: the draw, and a goal for each side. Where we were wrong: we expected four goals and there were two.
Before the match: our preview

In 30 seconds

  • Feyenoord are top on 23 points, three clear of AZ and four ahead of PSV in third.
  • Sven Mijnans is suspended and PSV are short of strikers, with Ricardo Pepi only a maybe.
  • PSV's winning run against Feyenoord ends here, but Feyenoord do not win it either.

The story

Peter Bosz's PSV are the champions, and they have owned this fixture lately. But they start this one third in the table and short of forwards. Sven Mijnans, who has been playing up front while the strikers are injured, was sent off in the 2–1 defeat at ADO Den Haag on Sat 17 Oct and is suspended. Ricardo Pepi has been out since the defeat at Twente on Sun 20 Sep, and Bosz says only that he might be back for this game.

PSV did lift the mood on Tue 20 Oct. Guus Til, who had gone off at ADO with trouble with his sight after a knock to the head, started in Porto and scored the only goal, a tap-in that gave PSV their first Champions League win of the season. That game also ended a bad week: PSV had lost at RB Leipzig and at ADO before it.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's Feyenoord come from Seville, where they lost 1–0 to Real Betis on Wed 21 Oct to an Isco penalty after the ball hit Jordan St. Juste's arm. Before that they had won five games in a row, including 2–0 at home to AZ, and in his first season back Van Bronckhorst has them top of the Eredivisie.

The table shows the gap. A Feyenoord win would put them seven points clear of PSV after ten games; a PSV win would cut the gap to a single point. This decides it: whether Filip Kostić can stop Anis Hadj Moussa going past him on Feyenoord's right. If he can, PSV have the edge; if not, Feyenoord score twice. Hadj Moussa has six goals in Feyenoord's last ten, and Gjivai Zechiël has five more from midfield.

Who to watch

The duel to watch: Anis Hadj Moussa against Filip Kostić. Hadj Moussa starts on the right of Feyenoord's front three; Kostić is PSV's left-back. Every time Kostić joins the attack, he leaves space behind him for Hadj Moussa. If PSV keep Kostić back, they lose width on the left.

Our call, explained

Our call: a draw, 2–2. Both sides scored in nine of their last ten, and both give chances away: Feyenoord conceded in seven of their last ten, PSV in eight. Feyenoord have more ways to score, with Hadj Moussa, Zechiël, Nacho Ferri and Luciano Valente all on the scoresheet in that run, so we expect them to score twice, most likely through Hadj Moussa getting past Kostić. PSV have won three and drawn one of their four home games in their last ten, and they have beaten Feyenoord in each of the last five meetings, so we think they find two as well, through Til and the runs of Dest from right-back.

Where this could go wrong. PSV's forward line is thin without Mijnans, and if Pepi is not fit, Feyenoord could win it by a goal. The other miss is a PSV win: Feyenoord played in Seville on Wed 21 Oct, a day after PSV were in Porto, and PSV are unbeaten at home in their last ten. We think a Feyenoord win is the likelier miss, because PSV are the side that has lost a scorer.
