What happened

SC Freiburg 1–3 Bayern München. We said Bayern win 2–1: Right result, wrong score, 10 points.

  • Dayot Upamecano put Bayern ahead on 16', from Michael Olise's pass, and Serge Gnabry made it 2–0 on 42', set up by Nathaniel Brown. Freiburg's goal was an own goal by Tom Bischof on 82', and Olise made it 3–1 on 90+5'. We said Harry Kane v Matthias Ginter; Kane did not score or set up a goal, and Bayern's goals came from Upamecano, Gnabry and Olise. We said it would turn on whether Ginter and Freiburg's centre-backs could keep Kane quiet; Kane did not score, and Bayern scored three anyway.
  • Both sides had 17 shots, but Bayern had 9 on target to 5 and 56% of the ball. What we got right: Bayern won. Where we were wrong: we expected Kane to make the difference and a one-goal margin; Bayern won by two. We also expected Freiburg to score; their only goal was an own goal.
Before the match: our preview

In 30 seconds

  • Freiburg are third, a point behind leaders Bayern after six games; a home win takes them above Bayern.
  • Vincent Kompany collapsed at a Bayern training session on Fri 23 Oct and is in hospital; his assistant Aaron Danks takes the team to Freiburg.
  • Even without Kompany, Luis Díaz and probably Joshua Kimmich, Bayern have enough to win in Freiburg.

The story

Bayern travel to Freiburg without their head coach. Vincent Kompany collapsed while watching the reserve team train on Fri 23 Oct and was taken to hospital. Max Eberl said on Sat 24 Oct that Kompany is stable and that his recovery will be measured in weeks rather than days. Aaron Danks, his assistant, leads the team on Sun 25 Oct with the rest of the staff, and said they will not burden Kompany with football while he recovers.

The game itself is first against third. Bayern have 14 points from six games and lead Borussia Dortmund only on goal difference; Julian Schuster's Freiburg have 13 and would go above them with a win. Freiburg have been strong at the Europa-Park-Stadion: all three home league games won, 11 goals scored and two conceded. But they arrive on two defeats, 1–2 at Leverkusen on Sun 18 Oct and 0–3 at Monaco in the Conference League on Thu 22 Oct, and Schuster admitted the week had not given his side a better feeling for Sun 25 Oct.

Bayern are unbeaten in their last ten in all competitions, yet the away games have been harder. They drew 2–2 at Augsburg and 0–0 at Schalke in the league, 3–3 at Viking in the Champions League, and they lost Luis Díaz to a hamstring injury in the 2–2 draw with Arsenal on Wed 21 Oct.

This decides it: whether Matthias Ginter and Freiburg's centre-backs can keep Harry Kane quiet. Kane set up Alphonso Davies and scored a penalty against Arsenal, and Bayern have scored 36 goals in their last ten.

Checked Sat 24 Oct 09:50 UTC: scfreiburg.com (preview and match reports) and Bundesliga.com (matchday 7 preview) for Freiburg; Bundesliga.com (Díaz, the Arsenal report, Kompany, the matchday 7 preview), fcbayern.com and kicker for Bayern. Reported = not yet confirmed by the club for this game. Line-ups: confirmed about an hour before kick-off; they go under Updates. We don't publish guessed XIs.

Derry Scherhant, who scored Freiburg's goal at Leverkusen, is not injured: he was left out of the side at Monaco and came on for Vincenzo Grifo after 62 minutes. Díaz's injury is the one that hurts most: he has 4 goals in Bayern's last ten, as many as Kane. Both line-ups are each side's last, from Wed 21 Oct and Thu 22 Oct, and neither is a prediction: Freiburg's had Engelhardt in it, Bayern's was without Kimmich.

Who to watch

The duel to watch: Harry Kane against Matthias Ginter. Kane likes to drop deep to link the play, and Ginter will probably be the centre-back asked to follow him. If Ginter goes with him, the space behind opens for Serge Gnabry and Alphonso Davies; if he stays, Kane has time to turn and shoot.

Our call, explained

Our call: Bayern win 2–1. We think Freiburg score: they have been at their best at home this season, and they scored in each of the last three meetings in Freiburg. But Bayern have more ways to win the game. Kane is in the side, Davies and Gnabry give them width, and even without Kimmich they held Arsenal. We expect Kane to find the extra goal.

Where this could go wrong. Bayern have drawn three of their last five away games in all competitions, and without Kompany, Díaz and perhaps Kimmich, a 1–1 or 2–2 is the likelier miss. If Engelhardt and Lienhart are fit, Freiburg have the home form to win it and go above Bayern. If Freiburg's tired legs from Thu 22 Oct tell, Bayern could win by more, as they did in Munich last November.

Updates

Data note: results, scorers, the table and line-ups from our database, read 24 Oct 07:40 UTC, so the counts run to Freiburg's game at Monaco on 22 Oct and Bayern's against Arsenal on 21 Oct. Freiburg's last ten include a friendly against FC Luzern on 3 Oct. Each player's goal total is a floor, because many goals in our records have no scorer attached.
