Swansea 1–1 West Ham

A draw. Logged 15 Oct, 07:06 UTC, never edited.

What happened

Swansea 0–1 West Ham. We said a draw, 1–1: Wrong result, 0 points.

  • Divine Mukasa scored the only goal on 34', from Mohamadou Kante's pass. We named Jarrod Bowen against Josh Tymon as the duel to watch, and said West Ham would score and Swansea would get one back at home. Bowen did not score; Mukasa got West Ham's goal, and Swansea did not score at all.
  • Swansea had 69% of the ball and 11 shots to 9, but none of their shots were on target; West Ham had 4 on target. What we got right: West Ham scored, as we expected. Where we were wrong: the result; we expected Swansea to score at home, and they did not.
Before the match: our preview

In 30 seconds

  • Swansea are top on 23 points and have won four in a row since losing 3–1 at Southampton on Tue 8 Sep.
  • West Ham's only defeat in their last ten games came in the League Cup, 3–2 at home to Fulham.
  • Swansea's home defence is the best thing about this fixture, and it still will not keep West Ham out.

The story

Vitor Matos's Swansea are top of the Championship, and they got there the hard way this month. They came from behind to beat Norwich 2–1 on Sat 10 Oct, with Yeo and Adam Idah scoring, then won 1–0 at Millwall three days later. Ronald came off the bench to score the winner in the 90th minute at The Den, in a game the referee stopped for almost seven minutes after alleged racist chanting aimed at Swansea substitute Eom Ji-Sung.

Nuno Espírito Santo's West Ham are in the Championship after going down from the Premier League on the last day of last season, and they score freely. They put six past Wrexham on Fri 11 Sep and six more past nine-man Lincoln on Wed 14 Oct, where Konstantinos Mavropanos headed the first from a Jarrod Bowen corner and Tomáš Souček, back from an ankle injury he picked up at the World Cup, scored twice off the bench. A 1–1 draw with QPR on Fri 9 Oct, when Bowen's stoppage-time penalty and the rebound were both saved, cost them the chance to go top.

The table we hold has West Ham fifth on 16 points from nine games, but it was read before the Lincoln win; with those three points they have 19 from ten, four behind Swansea. A home win puts Swansea seven clear of them. A West Ham win cuts the gap to one.

This decides it: Bowen against Swansea's home defence. Matos has one change to make at the back: Filip Lissah, who started at right-back at Millwall, is suspended. Bowen started on the right of West Ham's midfield at Lincoln, which puts him up against Josh Tymon, Swansea's left-back at Millwall.

Three of Swansea's scorers did not start at Millwall. Idah, with 4 goals in their last ten games, is the doubt above. Ronald began on the bench and came on to score the winner, and Eom was a substitute too. Yeo, Žan Vipotnik and J. Opoku all started. West Ham's main scorers, Bowen, Mavropanos and Kanté, all started at Lincoln.

Who to watch

The duel to watch: Jarrod Bowen against Josh Tymon. Bowen started wide on the right at Lincoln, and his corner set up Mavropanos's header for the first goal there. Tymon started at left-back at Millwall and is not on the injury list. If he keeps Bowen facing the touchline, Swansea can live with the rest; if Bowen gets inside him, Cabango and Seelt have to cover, and that is where West Ham score.

Our call, explained

Our score is 1–1, a draw. Swansea are the better defence and they are at home, where they have won three and drawn two of their last five and let in two goals. With Lissah in the side we would lean towards them. But he is suspended, and a West Ham side that has not failed to score in ten games will find one through Bowen, Mavropanos at a corner or Souček off the bench. Swansea have scored in three of those five home games, and West Ham have kept only three clean sheets in their last ten, so we expect a goal back.

Where this could go wrong. If Lissah's replacement looks unsure early, West Ham have the attack to win by two, as they did against Wolves on Tue 1 Sep. The other way, Swansea have won four in a row and won 1–0 at Millwall with a late goal; if Tymon keeps Bowen quiet, a narrow home win is likelier than a draw with goals.
