What happened

Paris Saint-Germain 4–2 Barcelona. We said Paris Saint-Germain win 3–2: Right result, wrong score, 10 points.

  • Désiré Doué scored first on 38', from João Neves's pass, and Xavi Espart levelled on 55' from Fermín López's pass. Lucas Hernández put PSG back in front on 72', set up by Doué, and Lamine Yamal made it 2–2 on 79'. Vitinha restored the lead on 81', and Fabián Ruiz made it 4–2 on 86' from Achraf Hakimi's pass. We said Ferran Torres v Pau Cubarsí; Torres did not score. Our risk line said that if Hakimi got in behind, the margin could be bigger than one: he set up the fourth.
  • PSG had 47% of the ball but 22 shots to 18 and 15 on target to 5. What we got right: a PSG win, and Barcelona scoring twice. Where we were wrong: the margin; we expected a win by one, and PSG won by two.
Before the match: our preview

In 30 seconds

  • Ferran Torres left Barcelona for Paris in August and now leads PSG's scorers.
  • Barcelona have conceded in seven of their last ten games; PSG have won six in a row.
  • Barcelona will score at the Parc des Princes, and they will still lose.

The story

Ferran Torres spent four and a half seasons at Barcelona, joined Paris Saint-Germain in August, and on Tue 20 Oct plays his old club for the first time. He has made the move look easy: seven goals in PSG's last ten games, the most in the side, with Ousmane Dembélé next on four. Luis Enrique's team have won six in a row since losing 1–2 at home to Monaco on Fri 4 Sep, including 4–2 at Manchester City on Wed 14 Oct.

At Strasbourg on Sat 17 Oct he changed the side heavily: Marquinhos was left out of the squad, and Achraf Hakimi, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, Désiré Doué and Dembélé started on the bench. PSG were a goal down until the 77th minute, then Illia Zabarnyi, Dembélé and Doué turned it into a 3–1 win. His first choices come into this game with a lighter week behind them.

Hansi Flick's Barcelona have won every league and Champions League game this season. The 5–2 at Real Betis on Sat 17 Oct made it nine La Liga wins from nine, which the club says equals the record start Real Madrid set in 1968/69. They have won their last ten games and scored 43 goals in them; Lamine Yamal has nine. El Clásico follows on Sun 25 Oct. Both sides have six points from two games and a goal difference of +7, first and second in the league-phase table.

This decides it: Ferran Torres against Pau Cubarsí. Torres led the line at Strasbourg; Cubarsí was the right-sided centre-back in Seville, next to Gerard Martín, in a defence that let Betis score twice. Torres shared a dressing room with most of these defenders until August. If he gets the better of Cubarsí, Barcelona need goals at the other end to keep up.

Checked Sat 17 Oct 19:20 UTC: psg.fr (squad, match report, medical update), PlanetePSG and Foot Mercato for PSG; fcbarcelona.com (squad, match report), Culemanía (El Español) and beIN Sports for Barcelona. Reported = not yet confirmed by the club. Line-ups: confirmed about an hour before kick-off; they go under Updates. We don't publish guessed XIs.

Three of the leading scorers in these squads are missing from the XIs below, all for known reasons. Dembélé came on for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the 63rd minute at Strasbourg. Marquinhos, three goals in PSG's last ten, was not in that squad: PlanetePSG listed him as the coach's choice, and French reports called it a rest. Raphinha came on in the 70th minute in Seville, according to Culemanía. Andreas Christensen and Roony Bardghji were not in Barcelona's squad for Betis; the club gave no reason.

Who to watch

The duel to watch: Ferran Torres against Pau Cubarsí. Torres played through the middle at Strasbourg, between Kvaratskhelia and Maghnes Akliouche, and set up Doué's late goal. Cubarsí was his teammate until August, so neither has much to learn about the other. If Cubarsí steps out to meet him, the space opens behind.

PSG's only one was 1–0 at Brest on 13 Sep.

Each side's last ten games, all competitions, to 17 Oct; the conceded row uses the last five. OddsIntel match database, read 17 Oct 2026.

Our call, explained

We have PSG winning 3–2. Barcelona will score: they have found at least three goals in nine of their last ten games, and Yamal will have chances. But they have conceded in seven of those ten, and Torres against Cubarsí is the duel PSG can win. Barcelona started Yamal, Pedri and Koundé at Betis, and Eric García went off with a muscle problem. At home, with a striker who knows the opposition, PSG should outscore them by one.

Where this goes wrong. The last time Barcelona came to the Parc des Princes, they won. If Cubarsí keeps Torres quiet and Raphinha is fit to start, Barcelona have enough goals to win in Paris. The other way, PSG won 4–1 in Barcelona in the 2024 tie; if Hakimi and Mendes get in behind Barcelona's full-backs, the margin could be bigger than one.
