Clubs level on points, goal difference, goals scored, away goals, wins and away wins share a place and are listed alphabetically by UEFA's short club name, as UEFA does while the league phase is in progress (Regulations, Article 18 · UEFA explainer). Champions League matchday 1 results: the story so far

Luis Enrique's PSG opened with a 6–1 against Slovan Bratislava: a hat-trick for Ferran Torres, two for Ousmane Dembélé. Bayern beat Bodø/Glimt 5–0 and are second only on goals scored. Manchester City kept a clean sheet in Porto, Erling Haaland scoring both in a 2–0. Our view, and it is only an opinion: PSG do not stay top, because City win at home.

Ermedin Demirović scored three for Stuttgart against Viking. Martin Ødegaard's goal won it for Mikel Arteta's Arsenal in Naples, and Como beat RB Leipzig 4–1. Five home sides lost: Club Brugge, Lille, Porto, Napoli and Slavia Prague.

How the Champions League league phase works

The league phase is one table of 36 clubs. Each club plays eight different opponents, four at home and four away, over eight matchdays from September to January. The top eight go straight to the round of 16. Clubs placed 9th to 24th play two-legged knockout play-offs for the other eight places. The bottom twelve are out.

  • 1st to 8th: straight into the round of 16.
  • 9th to 24th: a two-legged knockout play-off in February; the eight winners reach the round of 16.
  • 25th to 36th: out, with no drop into the Europa League.

Level on points? The tie-breakers are in the FAQ below.

Who qualifies for the round of 16?

After matchday 8 on 27 January 2027, the top eight go straight into the round of 16. The clubs placed 9th to 24th play two-legged knockout play-offs on 16/17 and 23/24 February 2027, and the eight winners take the other places. Everyone from 25th down is out of Europe for the season.

The play-off draw comes after matchday 8. Clubs placed 9th to 16th are seeded and meet clubs placed 17th to 24th: 9th or 10th against 23rd or 24th, down to 15th or 16th against 17th or 18th. So finishing 9th instead of 24th means a lower-placed opponent in February.

FAQ

Do teams that finish 25th to 36th drop into the Europa League?
No. Since the league phase replaced the group stage in 2024/25, there is no drop into the Europa League. Clubs placed 25th to 36th are out of Europe for the season.
What happens if teams are level on points?
Goal difference decides first, then goals scored, away goals scored, wins and away wins. There is no head-to-head. While the league phase is still going, clubs level on all of those share a place and are listed alphabetically. For the final table, opponents' points, opponents' goal difference, opponents' goals scored, fewer disciplinary points and the UEFA club coefficient follow, in that order.
Can teams from the same country meet in the league phase?
Not in the league phase: the draw keeps clubs from the same country apart. They can meet from the knockout phase play-offs on.
When and where is the final?
Saturday 5 June 2027 at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid.

Sources: UEFA on 25th and below going out with no other tournament, on no same-country opponents in the league phase, on same-country ties from the knockout play-offs on, and the 2026/27 regulations, Article 18 for the tie-breakers.
