The answer · data to · monthly

Among the big five, the Bundesliga scored the most: 3.24 goals a game in 2025/26, clearly ahead of Ligue 1 (2.83), the Premier League (2.75) and La Liga (2.69). Serie A scored the fewest, 2.43. Across 49 European top flights the Faroe Islands led with 3.63 a game in 2025, not clearly ahead of the Bundesliga.

Highest and lowest scoring leagues in Europe

The Bundesliga scored the most of the big five. At 3.24 a game it was clearly ahead of the other four, and scored about a third more than Serie A. One Bundesliga game in five (63 of 306) had five goals or more; the wildest was Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-6 Eintracht Frankfurt on 27 September 2025.

The Premier League, La Liga and Ligue 1 are too close to separate. 2.75, 2.69 and 2.83 a game: on one season, those gaps are within chance. The Premier League’s wildest game was Fulham 4-5 Manchester City on 2 December 2025.

Serie A scored the fewest of the five. 2.43 a game, clearly fewer than the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and the Premier League, though not clearly below La Liga. It had 36 goalless games out of 380; the Bundesliga had 12 out of 306.

Nobody clearly leads Europe. The Faroe Islands topped the list at 3.63 a game over their 2025 season, helped by an 11-0. On one season that is too close to separate from Finland, Switzerland, the Bundesliga and Iceland. At the other end, Bosnia and Herzegovina finished last on 2.16, too close to separate from Albania, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Serie A and Ireland.

Across all 49 leagues, 55.3% of goals came after half-time. Which leagues score most after the break is a question for a later page.

Is 2026/27 a higher-scoring season?

So far, yes. In the 36 August-to-May leagues with enough complete rounds, this season’s 2532 games have produced 2.95 goals a game. The same rounds last season produced 2.78. That gap is bigger than chance alone would usually give. Single leagues are only a few rounds in, so on its own each row is too early to read.

What about MLS, Brazil and Saudi Arabia?

Outside Europe we track a handful of big leagues. Their seasons run on different calendars, so they get their own table rather than a place in the ranking.

How we counted

Which leagues. The top division of every UEFA country we track, one per country. 49 of UEFA’s 55 member associations are in the chart. Not shown, because our database does not hold enough of their last season: Moldova (Moldova’s regular season has 84 games, under our 100-game minimum). Not tracked: Andorra, Gibraltar, Malta and San Marino; Liechtenstein has no league of its own. Leagues that play spring to autumn, like the Nordic and Baltic leagues, count their 2025 season.

Which games. Regular season only. Play-offs, finals, and the championship and relegation groups some leagues split into after the regular season are left out (38 of the 49 leagues had such rounds). Awarded results (9 games) are out because they were not played. A goal is any goal in the final score after 90 minutes and stoppage time, penalties and own goals included.

Checked twice. Every score comes from our match database and must match a second, independent source’s for the same game. 0 games of last season where the two disagreed are held out. A league is shown only if we hold 95% of its games and it has at least 100 (40 for this season so far). One pairing appears more often than the schedule allows in both sources (Belarus: Dinamo Minsk v FC Slutsk, 3 games instead of 2). All are counted; the difference is under 0.01 goals a game.

Is a gap real? One season is a sample, so every average has a range: how far it could move on one season’s luck alone. We call one league clearly higher or lower than another only when the gap between them is bigger than that. Among the big five we also correct for making ten comparisons at once. Otherwise we say too close to separate, or level when the gap is tiny. Every number on this page comes from one script run on our database, with a dated copy of the fixture list from Fri 30 Oct 2026.
